Bloodstock Promo by Campbell Stewart (aka The Fatman)

In the great tradition of the UK's long running rock festivals comes one that tends to have a bit more of a cult, underground feel to it. Very much a heavier 'metal' rather than a 'rock' festival, it may not be as busy as the big guns such as Sonisphere and Download, but what it may lack in size, it more than makes up for in pulling power when it comes to bands and discerning punters. That festival is Bloodstock Open Air at Walton on Trent. It started as a small one day indoor gig in Derby in 2001, headlined by Saxon, and ran as such for 6 years until 2006. In 2005 though, the outdoor festival started up and ran in tandem with the indoor one for 2 years until it became obvious that the outdoor gig was the way forward. Since then it has gone from strength to strength, and now runs for 3 full days (with a small gig set up on one stage on the Thursday for early arrivals), across 4 stages, with a huge number of bands from all genres of metal.
It is a shining light in these days of corporate festivals, being a much smaller and friendlier set up than the bigger festivals, run by fans, for fans, with a capacity of just 15,000. Despite that smaller size, it has attracted some top drawer bands over the years - the list of headliners on the main stage over the years is proof - Sebastian Bach, Children of Bodom, Edguy, Stratovarius, Testament, Lacuna Coil, In Flames, Opeth, Dimmu Borgir, Nightwish, Carcass, Cradle of Filth, Europe, Twisted Sister, W.A.S.P., Immortal, Motorhead, Behemoth, Machine Head, Alice Cooper, King Diamond, Lamb Of God, Slayer. Quite a roll call of the best in metal. This year is no exception, with Down, Emperor and Megadeth headlining the main stage, an amazing number of top class acts supporting, including many making return visits such as Saxon, Lacuna Coil, Carcass, Dimmu Borgir and more, and on the smaller stages, you get the chance to catch some of the best up and coming future stars in the metal scene. Your biggest problem will be deciding where to be at any one time! Keep a look out on MyRock Radio for a Bloodstock preview show nearer the time, featuring many of the bands playing this year.
